What Do I Need for My First Track Day at DriveTDX?
To drive in a DriveTDX HPDE road course event, you need: (1) A mechanically sound street or track car with zero active fluid leaks, (2) High-temp racing brake fluid flushed within 6 months and brake pads with ≥50% friction material (5mm+), (3) A Snell SA2020 or SA2025 auto helmet (rentals available for $35/day), (4) Form TDX-TECH-101 completed online prior to arrival, and (5) Long cotton pants and closed-toe shoes. $0 annual membership dues; no racing license required.

Braking System & Fluid

Steering, Suspension & Recovery

- HPDE is non-timed education, not wheel-to-wheel racing — zero contact tolerance
- Passing occurs strictly on designated straightaway passing zones
- Never dive-bomb into braking zones or pass in a corner without a distinct point-by
- The car being passed signals with a clear arm or hand point-by toward the passing side
- If a faster car catches you, check your mirrors and give a point-by on the next straight
🚶 5 MPH Paddock Speed Limit
- The paddock is an active pedestrian environment with mechanics, coaches, and guests
- Strict 5 MPH speed limit is enforced from the gate to pit out
- Never test brakes, warm tires, or accelerate aggressively in the paddock
- Always yield right of way to emergency vehicles, tow rigs, and pedestrians
- Keep children and guests closely supervised in paddock pit areas

- Display 8-inch or larger high-contrast numbers on both sides of your vehicle
- Blue painter's tape works great and will not harm your car's paint or clear coat
- Magnetic numbers are strongly discouraged as they frequently peel off at 130+ mph

What helmet certification is required for DriveTDX track days?
All drivers and passengers must wear an automotive helmet certified to Snell SA2020 or SA2025 standards with a secure chin strap. Motorcycle helmets (Snell M or DOT ratings) are strictly prohibited because they lack fire-retardant interior linings and are not engineered for multiple impacts against roll cages. Snell SA2015 helmets are now expired. Clean, sanitized Snell SA2020 rental helmets with fresh balaclavas are available at registration for $35 per day.
Can I drive my convertible at a DriveTDX track day?
Yes, provided the vehicle meets rollover safety standards. Factory convertibles with automated active pop-up roll hoops (such as modern Porsche 911s, BMW M4s, or Corvette C8s) are permitted. For convertibles with fixed roll hoops or aftermarket roll bars (such as Mazda Miatas or Honda S2000s), the vehicle must satisfy the 2.0-inch Broomstick Rule: a straight edge placed from the top of the windshield header to the top of the roll bar must clear the top of the driver’s helmet by at least 2.0 inches.
Do I need a racing license or previous track experience to participate?
No. DriveTDX is High-Performance Driver Education (HPDE), not wheel-to-wheel racing. There are $0 annual membership dues, and no racing license or prior track experience is required. First-time track drivers register in Run Group A (Novice with Coach) and are paired with a certified, dedicated in-car instructor for $50 per day, covering both on-track guidance and post-session classroom debriefs.
What brake fluid and brake pads should I install before the event?
Brakes are the single most critical mechanical system on track. You must have at least 50% friction material remaining (5mm+ minimum) on both front and rear brake pads. Standard street brake fluid will boil under heavy track braking; you must flush your brake system with fresh high-temperature racing brake fluid (DOT 4 or DOT 5.1, such as Motul RBF600/660, Castrol SRF, or Endless RF-650) within 6 months of the event.
Is track physical damage insurance included with my registration?
No. Standard street automobile insurance policies almost universally exclude driving on closed-course racing facilities. You are solely responsible for your vehicle and any facility barrier or track damage.
